What is the exit criteria?

October 23, 2026· product management3 reads

When you start something, for example, a project, make note of the exit criteria. At what point do you exit the project or in other words, at what point do you stop working on the project? There is always a point, but we don't realize it.

For example, when do you exit a beta—is it when one customer has used the product for 2 weeks, or 10 customers for 2 weeks, or 100 customers for a year? This goes back to the slider blog post. One extreme is one day, one customer tries out a feature; the other extreme for beta is 100 customers trying the feature for a year. I am sure you disagree with both, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. Find that and make note of it. Same thing for a feature: when do you stop working on a feature and move on to the next challenge?

What are you working on now, and do you know the exit criteria?
