Speaking Isn't Communicating

"Communicate" is defined as 'to impart or pass on (information, news, or ideas)'

There are three parts to successful communication.

  1. You say/write/send something over to the other person.

  2. The person has heard/read (seen)/receives that.

  3. They have understood what you said and they agree or disagree with what you said.

Bringing a WhatsApp analogy, you send a message, then you see the blue ticks and you are happy that you have communicated to them. But that thinking would be a blunder; that is just one half of the communication. The final step, which in my view is the most critical, is them acknowledging it by agreeing with it or disagreeing with it. The last step is the landing aspect.

We talk about vision to the team or budgeting to family members, but if it doesn't land (step 3), there is no point. Often times you have to say something more than once for it to land.

And when it lands is when you have communicated well; else you have just spoken.
