Crafting the defaults

September 23, 2026· product management· work2 reads

The problem with a lot of apps or software is that over time, they get bloated. I don't blame anyone for it; it is usually how customers pull you to build just one more feature that will stop churn or increase adoption or whatever floats your boat.

As the software bloats, it is harder for

  1. someone getting on this app for the first time (First time users) to know what to do, where to start.

  2. 80% of the customers are going to be using 20% of the product. They buy for the promise the product offers, but they only use what is really needed for their teams. So, existing customers also get frustrated when they can't find what they are looking for because of the bloat (Existing users)

So what do you do?

Understand your customers and set the defaults right so that for your important users (because you can never please everyone all the time), when they land, they have defaults that work for them 80% of the time (or more).

The trigger for this post is a cool default that I am not sure if it should be credited to Mac or Zoom or Chrome or YouTube. I was watching a YouTube video and as soon as I joined a Zoom call, the video paused all by itself. I love good defaults and it's worth a callout.
