The comfort of the sequels

Recently, I met my colleagues during an offsite event, and we were discussing what each of us does on weekends. One of the themes that emerged was 'watch something on the OTT' (Netflix, Prime and such). As we spoke more on that subject, an interesting theme emerged - almost everyone suffered from choice paralysis. When you have too many options, you don't know what to pick, and the fear of picking the wrong one paralyzes you.

I can attest to that. On a Saturday afternoon, after a good lunch, I'd like to watch something, but the options! Too many, and I don't want to spend 30 minutes to pick some new movie or a show that might be a disappointment because that is going to be my week's quota of movies. So I (and others in that group) just end up watching things that I've already seen. Of course, the tradeoff is that there is no climax and suspense in watching a movie or a show again.

That is where sequels come in. The comfort of sequels is that you have a good chance of liking the sequel because there is familiarity with the storytelling style and the quality of the actors. This is why sequels are finding success in today's busy world. Case in point: The Terminal List, Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan, and so on.

As much as we seek options, we equally crave familiarity.
