Construction work
Watching construction work is, for some reason, so interesting to watch. It is kind of a pastime for me, as the area outside of our apartment has seen a lot of development recently.
It is interesting because it is about how a group of people come together and get stuff done. Not the kind of computer world where I work, where features can be rolled back if some bug slipped through, or decisions can be changed midway through product development. Construction is atoms not bits; if a pillar is not straight, you can't just rollback (cmd+Z). I see humans organizing into hierarchical layers where some are managers and some are just doing what they are told.
There are times when they get a group of people in a vehicle for a specific task (laying the road) and in 2-3 days the task is completed and then they move on, like they were never there. Like ants on spilled sugar.
And out of all this work comes to life a building that passes the test of time. All the lines are parallel and perpendicular to each other.
Humans are amazing at building and some at breaking as well.
